On a 1 – 10 list, below are reasons “9 & 10” why you should require Genetically Modified Food be labeled as such (GMO), and why you should NOT eat conventional agricultural produce and processed foods:

#9 In the only human feeding study ever published on GMOs, Monsanto’s GMO “RoundUp Ready” soybeans were found to transfer Monsanto’s “RoundUp Ready” DNA to the bacteria living inside human intestines. (What percent of soybeans in U.S. are Genetically Modified and grown with pesticides and chemicals? Here’s the reference I found:  The United States (85%) and Argentina (98%) produce almost exclusively GM soybeans. In these countries, GM soybeans are approved without restrictions and are treated just like conventional soybeans.)

#10 According to Jeffrey Smith of the Institute for Responsible Technology, the transfer of Monsanto’s GMO Bt DNA to human digestive bacteria could create a “living pesticide factory” that could be responsible for the “increase in gastrointestinal problems, autoimmune diseases, food allergies, and childhood learning disorders – since 1996 when Bt crops came on the market.”

TIPS FOR AVOIDING GMOs

Tip #1: Buy Organic

Certified organic products cannot intentionally include any GMO ingredients. Buy products labeled “100% organic,” “organic,” or “made with organic ingredients.” You can be doubly sure if the product also has a Non-GMO Project Verified Seal. Read more about organic standards…

Tip #2:

Look for Non-GMO Project Seals

Products that carry the Non-GMO Project Seal are independently verified to be in compliance with North America’s only third party standard for GMO avoidance, including testing of at-risk ingredients. The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization committed to providing consumers with clearly labeled and independently verified non-GMO choices. Look for dairy products labeled “No rBGH or rBST,” or “artificial hormone-free.”

Tip #3:  Avoid at-risk ingredients

If it’s not labeled organic or verified non-GMO: Avoid products made with ingredients that might be derived from GMOs (see list). The eight GM food crops are Corn, Soybeans, Canola, Cottonseed, Sugar Beets, Hawaiian Papaya (most) and a small amount of Zucchini and Yellow Squash.

From Kellogg’s: Organic Consumers Association and allies warned Kellogg’s, if they used sugar from genetically engineered sugar beets in their foods, they would face a consumer boycott. Kellogg’s responded, claiming that, even though they don’t use genetically engineered ingredients in Europe, in the U.S., “consumer concerns about the usage of biotech ingredients in food production are low.”

From Crystal Sugar: David Berg, President of Crystal Sugar, the nation’s largest sugar beet processor, told the New York Times he thought customer acceptance of GE sugar was “a big nonevent.”

Maraline’s Note:  “Cow dairy is extremely high in lactic acid. Goat dairy has much less lactic acid if you’ve gotaa have your cheese, and almond milk, coconut milk, rice milk, etc are great milk alternatives:)

Local Sources

There is a growing movement for buying local and supporting local farmers. Resources to find organic and locally grown foods can be found using the links below:

Coconut Milk IceCream

Dairy Products may be from cows injected with GM bovine growth hormone. Look for labels stating No rBGH, rBST, or artificial hormones. OR Buy Organic Milk from reputable grass fed farm (some lower cost organic milk is from grain fed cows, depleting the essential vitamins and minerals).

Dangers of GMO Sugar Beets

Sugar If a non-organic product made in North American lists “sugar” as an ingredient (and NOT pure cane sugar), then it is almost certainly a combination of sugar from both sugar cane and GM sugar beets.

U.S. foods that are illegal in Europe, for health reasons!

Excerpt from article below….”Numerous studies have shown the link between behavioral problems in children and the laundry list of most common food colorings, including Yellow 5, Red 40, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, Orange B, Red 3 and Yellow 6.”

Did you know that in the U.S., land of plenty and pretty, that our bakers prefer bleached flour,  but not for health because flour is bleached using food additives (chemicals) including chlorine, bromates and peroxides? No? Well read on that’s just one little tidbit…wait until you read about macaroni and cheese! The following article was copied directly from nakedlaw.com

BIG PS: Here’s what Pillsbury says about their bleaching process – nothing!:

Pillsbury BEST® Flour
Frequently Asked Questions

What is bleached flour?
It is a natural whitening process important for obtaining high quality baked products. Bleaching agents are added to obtain the same effect on flour as natural aging only with faster results. The process does not affect the nutritional value of the flour. (Really? Then explain the “bleaching agents” and the “process”  on FAQ’s please.)

It’s important to note that our body requires certain levels of nutrition, when we believe we are ingesting nutrition, and we are not because of chemicals, additives, and processing (synthetic food), then there are consequences. The consequences are (child or adult) deficiencies and deficiencies cause our body to react with  symptoms, those symptoms become chronic, and chronic symptoms worsen to a diagnosis or dis-ease.  Maraline

Article: 5 Foods Americans Love That Are Banned in Europe

October 5, 2010 Consumer protection, Government, Healthcare

While it’s getting easier to tell what’s really in those packages on the supermarket shelves — if you care to read the label — those ingredients can still be pretty confusing. Here in the US, we chow down on foods that are actually illegal in the European Union and many other countries.

While public outcry over food almost always revolves around health, politics plays a big role when it comes to deciding whether to ban a food.

Milk, Cheese and Ice Cream

Actually, Europeans love dairy products and the EU countries together are the number one dairy producers in the world. Back in 1999, the EU banned milk and dairy products from cows treated with synthetic growth hormones, which are also banned in Japan, New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

Since 1993, the Food and Drug Administration has maintained that the hormones, which make cows produce more milk, pose no threat to humans. The FDA, the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institute of Health all agree that they can’t tell the difference between milk from treated and untreated cattle.

However, advocates, including some physicians, say the effects of bovine growth (more…)

Update GMO Salmon – Feds say GM Salmon won’t be labeled.

10/10/10 Update via Steve Dom with info from Dr. Douglass:

Feds say GM salmon won’t be labeled

The feds are getting closer to approving genetically modified frankenfish for your dinner table… and if they give the OK, they don’t even want you to know when you’re eating one. Consumer groups are calling for labels to identify the mutant salmon in the supermarket… but the FDA says you can take your labels and stick ’em.

That’s right — these hypocrites who are such sticklers for warning labels when it comes to all-natural products now claim that these new salmon are no different from any other salmon, so they don’t need labels.

Buying non-gmo and organic food on a budget.

So here we are knowing a lot of our produce is genetically modified, that our conventional produce is filled with chemicals and pesticides. That our meat and poultry is for the most part today, very inhumanely raised and given hormones, antibiotics, and degraded food…… BUT we have limited funds for food.

Click for guide to buy produce

Organic is so expensive, how do we make the best choices on our budget?

Choices should start with the understanding you may have to eat less to get more, however once you get that part, no matter what you buy, you’ll be looking for quality and not quantity. You’ll also become more aware of which companies are delivering food for your HEALTH, and which are delivering food for PROFIT, regardless of how they do it, and how you may suffer from the degraded foods.

Let’s keep in mind our body “REQUIRES” a minimum level of nutrition to FUNCTION, without it there are deficits, as the deficits grow, physical symptoms and dis-ease do as well. If you want to become empowered about your health you’re going to need to discern your food and water choices.

Poultry & Meat Eaters: Eating less meat and poultry may help you take care of yourself: For example first thing on your list is to make sure you buy clean poultry and meat, meaning NO hormones, antibiotics, and that the livestock had a natural life, rather than be caged or in a pen, i.e., grown bigger, faster, yet fed inferior food, (more…)

GMO Food Is Inherantly Unsafe

GMO Dangers

gm dangers

Genetically modified foods……..Are they safe?

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) doesn’t think so. The Academy reported that “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. The AAEM asked physicians to advise patients to avoid GM foods.

Before the FDA decided to allow GMOs into food without labeling, FDA scientists had repeatedly warned that GM foods can create unpredictable, hard-to-detect side effects, including allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems. They urged long-term safety studies, but were ignored.

“What’s Wrong With Our Food?” Plenty, says 11 year old Birke Baehr, TedxTalks

TEDxTalks Features 11-year-old Birke Baehr “What’s Wrong With Our Food”, Contributed by Raw Food Chef, Nandi Moore

He’s only been on the planet 11 years, and this child knows our food system is broken. He demonstrates that our children will not be fooled. This is a brilliant expose through a child’s eyes, so much so, I think many adults will open their eyes and “see reality” through Birke’s thought-provoking research and presentation.

Growing bigger, faster, and with a longer shelf life, has become what our food industry coins “successful and profitable”. Our degraded food and broken food system, is the elephant in the room that we all need to start talking about, moreover, do something about!

Please SHARE the information, and SHOP, PREPARE, AND EAT with food integrity in mind.
You’ll need to ignore the audience laugh track, it sometimes occurs at inappropriate moments, however, does not in the least, dilute the impact of this message. Maraline

Processed foods, Excitotoxins, GMO, Chemicals, Pesticides, inhumane treatment, inferior food, antibiotics, hormones, grow bigger and faster mentality of livestock, poultry, and fish, and overall negligence about human health in general, is FLAT OUT WRONG!

The impact of this message should be clear to us, there is so much wrong with our food system and it happened silently, decision making obviously slanted in the best financial interest of business, negligent of human health, negligent of being good stewards of our animals, land, and water. Mostly, we didn’t know it was happening and we cannot ignore the ramifications any longer, because to do so, effectively destroys any chance of good health for our children.

Let’s not start  impact by bringing back “organic”, that which was commonplace before WWII. We owe it to ourselves, our children, our parents, and the animals, to hold these companies accountable.

Reality check:  20 years ago how many children did you know who suffered from allergies, asthma, sleep issues, weight issues, diabetes, and worse? Today, the healthy, slim, and vibrant person is the exception instead of the rule.

Please, let’s “listen” to the children. It begins with facing some raw truths, education, and looking beyond the pretty packaging.

Do we really want Genetically Engineered Salmon? Frankenfish or Aqua Advantage Fish? What is GMO?

Photo of GMO Agua Advantage Salmon (the large one) and "real" Atlantic Salmon

In this photo, the large fish is genetically engineered, as opposed to the small fish which is a “real” Atlantic Salmon.AquaBounty, a Massachusetts based company, is awaiting FDA approval for their genetically engineered salmon to hit the fish markets around the country. If approved, the fish could be on the market as early as 2012, says the AP.

Genetic Modification is such a bottom line moneymaker that big business is pouring tons of money into genetically altering our food sources. Take soybeans, all of a sudden they are bad for us, why? Soy beans absorb more chemicals and pesticides than any other vegetable, and we have genetically modified our soy, so literally unless it says “organic”, I’m not sure what you are eating. I am sure however, that every processed food on the shelf at the grocery store stands an above average chance at having soy (and not “organic”) as an ingredient, which explains a lot!

So, our Strawberries, Corn, Wheat, Potatoes, Soybeans, and really so many more produce items are silently genetically modified and sold to us, and  now Salmon? And guess what, no labelling required (as of yet), which is why most health conscious people are getting their ire up! GMO is becoming a huge business of bigger, faster, and costs less to produce! But, what about our health? Food is for our health, bottom line, and no other reason!

We have all heard the “CURRENT” news and talk of the FDA approving gentically altered salmon, or loosely referred to as  Frankenfish Salmon. So  let’s discuss this whole process of genetically modifying our fish, specifically salmon because it’s vulverable right now, and moreover,  it’s time we all know the details!

As a sidebar: If you are not aware of the difference between real fish that is called farmed salmon and real fish that is called wild salmon, I’ve added that information at the end of this post because there are inherent issues with farmed salmon that can be unhealthy as well. ALWAYS SHOP cold water wild salmon for good health. Let’s hope we don’t have to identify our fish as real or not – wow!

Anyway, here is the best definition of GMO Salmon I could find: (more…)
